OpenAI Launches Dots

OpenAI begins rolling out Dots, always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra with their own cloud computers.

Product Launch

What Happened

On September 29, 2026, OpenAI began rolling out Dots to Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise plans in eligible markets. Users could create a primary dot; specialist organizational dots were introduced separately through focused enterprise pilots.

Why It Matters

Dots made ongoing delegation a product concept: an agent could keep pursuing goals, respond to new information, and maintain work between conversations. This extends the agent interface from individual task sessions toward a persistent working relationship.

Technical Details

Dots use GPT-6 Astra, a cloud computer, a browser, and connected applications. They can communicate through ChatGPT, Slack, and Teams and work on multiple projects. Unprompted proactive research uses read-only tools. Custom Rules define actions that are allowed, blocked, or require approval. Auto-review checks consequential actions against instructions, rules, and safety requirements. Future teams of dots and wider availability were ambitions, not capabilities established by the initial rollout.
