Regulation

What Happened

On June 29, 2026, the EU Council gave final approval to amendments simplifying the AI Act. Political agreement had been reached May 7; the Commission confirms that the amendments entered into force July 27. This entry records final adoption.

Why It Matters

The amendments materially revise the rollout of a major comprehensive AI law. They change compliance timelines while adding a new prohibited-practice category, showing how AI regulation is being revised during implementation.

Technical Details

Standalone high-risk requirements move to December 2, 2027; requirements for high-risk AI embedded in regulated products move to August 2, 2028. New prohibitions covering non-consensual sexual content and child sexual abuse material apply from December 2026. Transparency duties and enforcement powers begin August 2, 2026, with specific transition periods. Adoption therefore does not mean all provisions immediately apply.
